Private hammam in Marrakech
The traditional ritual, in your own villa, no queue and no fixed hours.
Villa Azur has a traditional private hammam, heated on request and reserved for villa guests only. It is a dedicated room, not a converted shower cubicle: tadelakt floor and benches, steam produced by a boiler, and a temperature that builds gradually as it does in a public hammam. The difference is the silence, the space, and the fact that you decide everything: the time, the length, who goes in and who stays out.
What is included
Access to the hammam is included in your stay at no extra cost. We provide beldi soap (black olive-oil soap), the kessa (the horsehair glove that exfoliates), ghassoul (washing clay from the Middle Atlas), towels and buckets. You have nothing to buy in the souks beforehand, unless you want to take your own products home.
How a session works
You start with 10 to 15 minutes sitting in the steam, letting the skin open up. Then comes the beldi soap, left on for 5 minutes before rinsing. The kessa scrub follows: this is the step that surprises people, it lifts dead skin you had no idea was there. Then ghassoul on hair and body, a final rinse, and a gradual return to cool air. Allow an hour in total, an hour and a half if you take your time.
With or without a practitioner
You can do the ritual yourself, between adults or as a couple, with nobody disturbing you. If you would rather be looked after, we can arrange for a professional kessala from the neighbouring village: she performs the full scrub, something she has done for years. Let us know 48 hours ahead so we can arrange her visit. This service is paid directly to her, around 150 to 200 MAD per person.
Private hammam or public hammam?
Both have their place and they do not compete. A public hammam in the medina immerses you in a Moroccan social practice, loud, communal, disorienting in the best way. The villa's private hammam offers the opposite: calm, privacy, and the option of going in at 10pm after a day walking the souks. Many of our guests do both during their stay. Our full guide to hammams in Marrakech covers the public addresses worth the trip.
Families and children
The private hammam is often the best introduction for children: no crowd, no strangers, and a length you can adapt. In practice, 10 to 15 minutes is plenty for under-10s, as the heat is harder on them than on adults. We lower the temperature on request. Babies under 2, on the other hand, should not go in, this is a standard medical contraindication.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to book the hammam in advance?
Just let us know the day before. The boiler takes several hours to bring the room up to temperature, it is not something that fires up in 10 minutes. A WhatsApp message to the caretaker is enough.
Is it genuinely included?
Yes, access to the hammam and the basic products are included in the rental price. Only a professional kessala, if you request one, is paid separately and directly to her.
What should I wear?
A swimsuit or underwear you do not mind staining, as beldi soap and ghassoul mark light fabrics. Bring plastic sandals too, the floor gets hot.
How many people can go in at once?
Four adults fit comfortably in the room. Beyond that you lose the restful side of it and the heat becomes hard to bear. Nothing stops you running two sessions in one evening.
Are there any contraindications?
Yes, as with any steam bath: pregnancy, heart conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, and children under 2. If in doubt, check with your doctor before you travel.
